Nursing Home Resident Drowns in Bathtub
A 51- year old resident of a Chicago nursing home died the evening of July 4 due to drowning in the bathtub. The woman was found a little before 9 p.m. in her bathtub with the water still running. The woman was a mentally ill patient.  The nursing home provides care to approximately 100 residents in the northwest part of the city.  Police officers were called to the scene but were unable to revive the woman.
There is an ongoing investigation into her death and homicide and negligence are not being overlooked as possible causes.
The nursing home has been inspected by government officials on several occassions between February 2009 and April 2010 after complaints had been filed.  The inspectors gave the nursing home their lowest ranging for failure to meet health requirements and quality of their medical staff.
The investigators found the nursing home had previously failed to protect residents from neglet, theft of personal property, and mistreatment.  As well, it was discovered that the staff had on occassion failed to provide the care that respected each resident's self dignity and personal preference.
