According to recent article in Men’s Health Magazine, St. Louis was ranked as one of the most dangerous cities for men in regard to automobile accidents. The magazine tabulated the rate of fatal crashes; the percentage of fatalities involving alcohol, speeding, or hit and run; and the rate of seatbelt use (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Other dangerous cities for men and auto accidents were Dallas, TX; Charleston, WV; Houston, TX; Billings, MT; Providence, RI; Columbia, SC and Durham, SC; as well as Orlando and Austin.
The Riverfront Times discussed the article and pointed out the statistics since January 1 of 2012 and pointed to “Missourians disdain for the seatbelt”.
According to the article, when President Eisenhower funded our interstate highway system in 1956, Missouri became one of the first states to break ground. One of the nation’s oldest interstates, I-70 runs right through St. Louis, Missouri.
Further information from Men’s Health gives St. Louis, states that Missouri has an overall ranking of 6th for America’s Drunkest Cities by citing deaths from liver disease at 43rd, deaths in DUI Crashes at 6th, binge drinking at 6th, DUI arrests at 50th and Harsh DUI Laws at 42nd. However, the specific statistics Men’s Health Magazine used to tabulate the information and rankings was not specifically shared.
I know, I live in St. Louis and I don’t notice that I see more or less drunk drivers than when I have lived in other states. Can I say this is absolutely correct? No, but I can say that statistics and publication of such information is not good for our city. Having one auto accident related to alcohol, dangerous driving or distracted driving is one too many. Daily, I speak with victims of auto accidents and the stories are always tragic. When negligence of a driver injures another, it is not merely tragic but extremely wasteful of life. At The Cagle Law Firm we try to draw awareness to safety and avoiding driving when consuming alcohol. See our blog and Facebook page for “There Are No Extra Lives When You Drink and Drive”—a video promoting safe driving.”http://www.facebook.com/v/10150523425041141” />
How should we view this information provided by Men’s Health? We should be aware of the dangers for all people in the greater St. Louis area when drivers mix alcohol or drugs with motor vehicles. This of course includes motorcycles now that the weather is great and more and more motorcyclist hit the highways.
