Fatalities and Injuries Over Holiday Weekend in Missouri

Summer Holiday Weekend Results in over 132 Crashes

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there were a 132 motor vehicle crashes between 6 p.m. on June 30 and 12 a.m. on July 4, 2017. These numbers do not include any crashes, injuries or fatalities worked by any municipality or county law enforcement.

During the same time period in 2016, there were five fatalities. This last weekend however, there were 14 reported fatalities according to the patrol. There were 494 traffic crashes and 186 injuries.

There were 172 driving while under the influence citations and 118 drug arrests. Last year (2016) there were 397 crashes, 565 injuries and five fatalities, 121 DWI’s and 122 Drug arrests.

Thus, there were more road crashes this holiday weekend compared to last year, fewer people were injured but the fatalities were almost three times higher than in 2016.

June 30, 2017

A Boone County man, age 33 was killed just before Midnight when he fell off the right side of the vehicle (a 1991 Yamaha golf cart) and struck his head. This incident occurred in Centralia, MO.

July 2, 2017

At approximately 3:35 a.m., a 26 year old Lilbourn man was killed when he was ejected off of his 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle after failing to negotiate a curve and ran off the left side of the roadway. The crash buy paroxetine 10mg occurred on Missouri Highway 158 off ramp to US Highway 67.

Two men were killed in a two-motorcycle crash around 12:30 p.m. According to the MSHP, two men were killed, however, a news article claimed an 18 year-old Exeter man was killed and a 29 year-old man from Russellville, AL was seriously injured when the motorcycles they were riding collided at Layton Hollow road, two miles south of Rocky Comfort. Both men were airlifted to Freeman West Hospital of Joplin. Due to the extent of the 29 year old victim’s injuries, a blood test for alcohol was not conducted.

July 3, 2017

A 57 year-old Versailles man was killed when his Kawasaki UTV crossed the center and travelled off the left side of the road, struck a bridge support and slid down an embankment. The driver was ejected and died at the scene. The one-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 1 p.m.

At 7 p.m. a 55 year-old Park Hills, MO man was killed when his vehicle, a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle failed to yield to a 2016 Mercedes Benz and was struck by the Mercedes. The motorcyclist was ejected and died at the scene. The crash occurred on Highway Y/Highway 21 in Ellington, MO.

July 4, 2017

At approximately 1:30 a.m. A 1995 Isuzu Rodeo crossed the center lane and struck a 2015 Hyundai Elantra head-on crash at Route V, 3 miles south of Joplin in Newton County. An 18 year-old Isuzu occupant was killed and pronounced dead at the scene and the 17 year-old driver sustained serious injures and was transported to Mercy in Joplin, MO. The two occupants in the Hyundai were killed in the crash, a 32 year old Wentzville woman and a 67 year old Neosho woman.

At 7:25 a.m., a 53 year-old Perryville man was traveling in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado and travelled off the left side of the roadway, striking a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later that evening at 6:10 p.m., a 59 year old Berwyn, IL man was involved in a crash when his 1995 Ford F150 was slowing to make a left turn, swerved to avoid a collision, ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a ditch and utility pole. The fatal crash occurred on Missouri 13 in Lampe, MO in Stone County.

At 9:50 p.m., a 2105 Chevrolet Cruze and a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country were parked on the shoulder facing northbound on Route MM. A 2010 GMC Sierra struck the Chevy Cruze and two subjects who were standing outside the vehicle. Debris from the Cruze hit the Town and Country. Three people were killed including a child and all three were from Adrian, MO. The driver of the GMC was moderately injured.

Motorcycle Crashes

Of the fatalities, five involved motorcycles. There were several one-vehicle crashes, a head-on collision and a multiple-vehicle crash. According to MSHP reports, at least 37 people were seriously injured. When the MSHP lists someone as “serious”, it means they had critical injuries that are life-threatening. In addition, there were 251 more people with moderate and minor injuries. Remember, these are the injuries are the scene, thus many people who are listed as “minor” or “moderate” may in fact require a lot more medical treatment.
