Numerous Fatal Car Crashes in First Weekend of Summer

This past weekend was the first official weekend of summer. While the highest numbers of serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes usually occur over the Fourth of July weekend, there several tragic fatal crashes this past weekend.

Deadly Car Crashes Across the State

Kansas City:

Two people were killed when their car ran off an interstate overpass in Kansas City.  Authorities say that a 21 year-old female student of University of Central Missouri and a 22 year old Overland Park, KS man died at the scene Saturday night along Interstate 435. Two back seat passengers were seriously injured.

Independence:

At approximately 4:30 Monday morning, a driver was headed south on Highway 291 when they hit a pole and the vehicle overturned at Salisbury Road and then the vehicle caught fire.  Two teenage boys are dead and two more are injured after the crash.

St. Louis:

Three men were killed Later Friday night in a car crash that knocked out power to over 900 Ameren customers.  Police responded at approximately 11:450 p.m to the intersection of Shackelford Road and Kingsford Drive north of Florissant.

According to reports, a pick up was turning left onto Kingsford Drive from northbound Shackelford Road when it struck a car driving southbound on Shackelford.  The car’s driver, a 20 year-old man of Florissant died at the scene. Two passengers were transported to the hospital where they later died–a 20 year-old man from St. Louis County and a 20 year-old man of Spanish Lake.

Officers say that one of the vehicles struck a utility pole during the accident resulting in loss of power.

Rolla:

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a 7 year old Branson girl was killed in a one-vehicle rollover crash in Phelps County on Sunday.  Authorities say she was a passenger in a SUV that had a blowout and the driver lost control on Interstate 44 in Rolla. The car ran off the right side of the road and overturned several times.  The girl’s mother and two brothers were also in the SUV and suffered minor injuries.

The Missouri Highway Patrol listed several other fatalities across the state including the death of a 31 year old Louisburg, MO woman, a 32 year old Joplin woman, and a 32 year old Hale, MO woman.

At this point, most of the above crashes are still being investigated as to causes.  When there is a minor car crash, it is inconvenient.
