It’s an intersection outside of Bolivar, MO with 16 crashes since the first of the year. If you’ve driven MO Highway 13, then you are very acquainted this dangerous intersection.
I was just through there about four times last week alone. Once upon a time, I lived in that area. Granted, when I lived there. it was a two-lane highway, and it didn’t have nearly the traffic since becoming a four-lane and straight drive to Warrensburg, MO.
It was a dangerous intersection in the 1980’s and it continues to be despite the safety measures that MoDOT has attempted in Polk, Henry and Green Counties. Along MO 13, at least two traffic lights have been installed over the years due to the multiple motor vehicle crashes at two specific intersections between Bolivar and Springfield. As well, drivers north of Bolivar have concerns about increased crashes along that stretch of MO 13.
On Wednesday, August 30th, the 16th crash of this year occurred around 1:30 p.m. A 19 year-old Ash Grove woman was southbound on MO 13 in a 1995 Oldsmobile when her vehicle hit a semi-truck that was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of MO 13 from Route U to turn north onto MO 13.
The Missouri Department of Transportation is hosting a public meeting to present a plan to upgrade 10 Polk County intersections, including MO 13 and Route U. If you are not able to attend the meeting and live or work along Route 13, you are invited to give feedback or attend the meeting and give feedback regarding
The wreck on Wednesday was the second in the last 10 days. Local authorities as well as the Missouri State Highway Patrol have worked at least 10 of these crashes at this intersection and multiple other MO 13 intersections. Whether it is an issue of inattentiveness, visibility or design, we rely on transportation experts to look for solution and they do that best with input from those people who frequently drive the intersection.
Intersections by nature are the most likely places for crashes as traffic intersects. There are many different types of intersection designs that can assist in reducing the frequency of crashes, but these redesigns and construction cost money. Missouri like other states has a limited budget to spread around the state.
