Chain of Accidents Result in Fall of 50 Feet in Downtown St. Louis, Missouri

A chain of accidents caused two people to be injured and resulted in a person going over the overpass at Chouteau and Third Street and falling approximately 50 feet to their death. According to KMOV News, the initial event apparently began when two people got out of their cars to exchange insurance information after a minor auto accident. A third car then hit them. Police suspect a slick spot in the road most likely caused the crashes. Lt. Carols Ross of the Missouri Highway Patrol, stated, “It’s a mistake for people to get out of their cars on the interstate if they can avoid it”. Ross further indicated that if drivers can still drive their cars they should get off at the next exit to exchange information and/or call the police. Northbound lanes of highway 55 between Park Ave/7 th St and I-64/I-70 were closed for several hours for roadway clean up.
Several stories have surfaced in the last few days about non-moving cars being hit by other cars or semi-trucks resulting in serious injuries and fatalities. Attempt to pull your car completely off of the highway and preferably onto an exit if you are having mechanical problems. Call emergency personnel if your car becomes disabled so officers can come and redirect traffic to avoid a collision.
