A 28 yr-old Collinsville man has been charged after leaving the scene of an accident with injury and felony driving under the influence of alcohol. Apparently, the accident occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday morning when the man was leaving a restaurant/bar in East St. Louis. According to Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Capt Mike Dixon, “the driver struck another car with his 1997 Ford Mustang as he tried to back out of a parking space”. According to accounts, the owner of the car that was hit, saw the collision and was attempting to make contact with the 28 yr old driver. “A female acquaintance of the owner of the car that was hit and was speaking with (the 28 yr old driver) when he decided to flee and struck her with his car”
Less than half an hour after the auto accident, the man was found on Collinsville Road asleep in his car. At that time, police were able to determine that he was driving on a revoked license due to a previous driving under the influence conviction and was under the influence of alcohol. The driver refused to submit to a field sobriety and breathalyzer testing. Since the man’s driver’s license was revoked for a previous DUI conviction at the time of the incident, the new DUI charge has been enhanced to a felony.
Numerous times I discuss the dangers of drinking and driving whether it be adults or teens in press releases and blogs. There is simply no place for alcohol if you are climbing behind the wheel. Fortunately, in the above incident, the woman suffered minor injuries according to reports and refused medical treatment. This incident could have easily been fatal. Once
Drinking and driving once is not okay but repeated offenses are simply unacceptable. Investigators will determine if the alleged charges are true in the Collinsville driver’s story, and I am not attempting to convict this man. The point of writing about this topic is to increase the awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving and the impact those negligent decisions have on the well-being of others. If you have been injured in an auto accident that involved alcohol and you have been injured, you need legal representation. Chances are, if someone has repeated DUI convictions, they are not able to obtain auto insurance. If you have been injured by someone who is driving illegally, it may not be easy at all to receive any compensation. Every situation is different and often you need an attorney who can conduct a thorough investigation to determine the facts, causes and liability—this is not always easy as an individual acting alone.
