St. John Man Killed at St. Charles Rock Road, in St. Louis, Missouri

A St. John, Missouri man is dead after pulling into the path of a tow truck, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Thursday evening, a man, driving a Ford minivan, was leaving a shopping center, attempting to make a right onto St. Charles Rock Road in St. Louis County, Missouri. At the last moment, he apparently decided to go left and was struck on the driver’s side by the oncoming tow truck. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
This collision calls the mind the sad accident blogged about yesterday, with a dump truck striking a vehicle and injuring two young children. The weight disparity between these two vehicles is immense, and the impact can lead to serious injuries for the people in the car. In the previous case, the trucking company was cited for allegedly operating a dump truck 22,000 pounds overweight.
This St. John, Missouri car accident does not initally appear to be the result of negligence, but rather just an unfortunate accident involving a serious type of crash. The side collision, or T-Bone accident, can have devastating consequences for those in the vehicle being T-Boned. Because the sides of the vehicle offer little protection, car manufacturers have taken steps to help blunt the impact to the person in the vehicle. Certainly experts will continue to investigate the accident to detemine all factors involved.
One of the more recent improvements in side impact crashes is the use of side curtain airbags. These airbags, often placed around the top of the window, are made to deploy upon impact. These help shield the passenger or driver from the other vehicle, any broken glass that may fly at them, and prevent him or her from striking their head against the door. These airbags have helped prevent numerous head, neck, and spinal injuries. As a Missouri car accident attorney, I have seen how devastating a head injury can be and I encourage everyone to look for new cars that contain these airbags.
If you are unsure how your car would perform in this sort of accident, or unsure of what safety features it may have, there are websites that contain this information. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has a database going back 20 years or more. It is striking to see the quality differences between cars made in the mid-90s versus cars made today. It is reassuring to see that vehicle manufacturers are continuously studying and improving safety quality on vehicles.
Zane T. Cagle and the Missouri car accident attorneys at The Cagle Law Firm encourage everyone to do research and see how your vehicle performs on these safety tests. We also encourage all drivers to pay close attention to other vehicles on the road. As the days get shorter and night comes earlier, there is increased danger from inattentive drivers or from people who simply don’t see well at night. As we also start to enter the holiday season, we can feel hurried and not necessarily make safety a priority. It’s worth an extra few minutes to ensure your and your family’s safety.
