Calloway County Fatal Crash
Two people were killed Tuesday morning in seven vehicle pileup on eastbound Interstate 70 near the Kingdom City exit.
Five People Injured
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the multi-vehicle crashes occurred around 9:25 a.m. at mile marker 147.8 when at least one vehicle crossed over the wire cable in the median from westbound Interstate 70. Apparently, two tractor-trailers collided head-on. One other tractor-trailer, three pick-ups and a SUV were also involved in the multivehicle crash.
Two men, both 46 years of age were pronounced dead at the scene.
Crash Unit Investigating
The Missouri Highway Patrol’s Major Crash Unit spent most of the day collecting evidence and documenting the crash scene in an effort to identify contributing causes and circumstances. There was a light rain falling at the time of the accident.
According to updated reports, a 42 woman of Williamsburg hydroplaned in the westbound lanes of I-70. At the same time, another westbound driver swerved to avoid hitting the hydroplaning vehicle. The swerving vehicle ended up in the opposite lanes of I-70 colliding with a truck in the opposite lane of traffic. The original car became stuck underneath the “towed portion” of the swerving vehicle. The initial driver of the hydroplaning vehicle suffered moderate injures.
Three other cars piled into one another at the back of the truck in the opposite lanes of traffic after the head-on tractor-trailer crash. Two Moorehead, KY occupants suffered serious injuries.
‘Total Station’ Technology
What is a total station? It is a modern surveying instrument that integrates an electronic theodolite with an electronic distance meter. A theodolite uses a movable telescope to measure angles in both the horizontal and vertical planes. Traditionally, tape was used to measure off distance, but the “total station” allows investigators to measure a crash site far more quickly and efficiently. Accident reconstructions are completed to contribute to the knowledge of crashes and traffic safety as well as aiding vehicle manufacturers. Also, determining causes and contributing factors in a crashes usually assists in liability issues. Total station investigation technology is integral part of traffic fatality personal injury claims.
