A 17-year old girl is in critical condition at the St. Louis University Hospital after she was hit by two different vehicles participating in a drag race in north downtown St. Louis. The pedestrian victim was apparently a “flag girl” for the race and was struck by the Mitsubishi Eclipse which knocked her into the path of a truck that was also racing according to news sources. Neither driver stopped after the girl was struck and warrants were issued for their arrest for various charges of assault and leaving the scene of an accident. Bystanders attended to the girl’s injuries and notified emergency personnel.
While drag racing is dangerous, one usually thinks of it only being dangerous for the drivers. However, participants such as “flag girls” or observers can be injured when driving goes awry or complications develop such as oncoming traffic, skidding and drivers losing control. Auto accidents can easily occur during races as well as bystander injury. Attending unofficial car races is always a risky endeavor. Due to the accident in north St. Louis, there has been more discussion about the popularity of drag racing. Drag racing usually occurs on streets and highways that have very little traffic, therefore, many of us are not aware of it until something goes very wrong. Obviously, when racing drivers are exceeding the street speed limits and often driving carelessly.
Excessive speed and racing are usually considered negligent driving behaviors and victims of such motor vehicle accidents usually have a right to pursue a personal injury claim for medical bills, lost wages, or even wrongful death. Navigating the claims process requires an attorney who will conduct a thorough investigation using accident reconstruction and experts.
