Holiday Weekend–Serious Injury and Death Toll Rise in Missouri

Labor Day weekend is usually celebrated as the last long weekend of summer resulting in higher traffic volume on the intestates and waterways.
This weekend saw an increase in water-related fatalities and also many car crashes.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, nearly 200 people were involved in 96 car crashes since Friday night when the counting period started.
Car Crashes in Missouri
Yesterday, there were multiple crashes that tied up Interstate 44 for much of the day. In Halltown, Missouri there were as many as 20 separate weather-related crashes on a short stretch of Interstate 44. The first crash occurred at Mile Marker 58 around 4:40 p.m. on Monday, Labor Day. Immediately following, by other crashes as traffic was trying to slow down due to the heavy rain downpour. In total, there were 20 crashes between mile markers 58 and 63, blocking both East and West-bound lanes.
According to the MO Highway Patrol, there were between 40 and 50 different vehicles including semi-trucks involved in the crashes. Officers said that most of the injures were minor in nature but that two drivers were treated for serious injuries.
At least 10 people are recovering from six boat crashes. There were two drowning’s also reported in the state including the death of a 30 year old Jefferson City man who drowned in the Osage River.
Comparably, in 2014, there were no drowning’s the same weekend, but this last weekend saw a double in the number of this year’s boating crashes.
