A 31-year old Kirkwood woman was sentenced to three years last Friday in St. Louis County, Missouri. The woman was sentenced in a drunken driving accident that resulted in the death of a 19 year old University City man last year. According to police, the woman’s blood alcohol limit was three times the Missouri limit of .08 when she rear ended a bicyclist last February 3, 2012. The victim was riding home from work at Dewey’s Pizza and was about a block from home when the woman rear ended his bicycle with her Honda Civic. The accident occurred around 11:20 p.m. on Delmar Boulevard. He was taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital where he died the next day.
According to authorities, the 31 year old woman had a blood alcohol level of 0.262 according to a breath test administered by the University City Police. The woman was charged about two months after the accident with involuntary manslaughter and a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. The sentence was a plea deal according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Drinking and driving ruins lives. All of those involved are forever changed either directly or indirectly.
According to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), 9,878 people were killed in 2011 and approximately 350,000 people were injured in drunk driving crashes. Every motor vehicle crash not only impacts the victim but their families, co-workers and classmates. The price tag associated with drunk driving in 2011 was around $132 billion a year. These statistics never cease to shock and surprise. Organizations like MADD and SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) concentrate strong efforts on awareness and prevention. I have written many articles and press releases on reducing your chances of being involved in a drunk driving motor vehicle accidents by planning your transportation before you drink. As repeition seems to increase awareness, we must use this opportunity to share again about how important it is to plan ahead and not drink and drive.
MADD also stated that every 90 seconds someone is injured in a dunk driving accident. The only thing you can do about that is to be certain that you never climb behind the wheel if you have been drinking—drunk driving is one of the few, most preventable crimes in our country.
