Man Arrested in DUI Crash on Martin Luther King Bridge in St. Louis, Missouri

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department has located and arrested a 31-year old man according to Captain Steve Johnson, the department’s chief investigator. Apparently, the man has been a prisoner there since December of 2009 on a rape charge. The man nearly killed a Belleville motorist on the Martin Luther King Bridge in an auto accident in May of 2009. A St. Clair judge issued a warrant for the man’s arrest in November of 2009, five months after the man plead guilty in county court to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence. The man failed to show for court-ordered alcohol counseling sessions or pay $2,000 fine.
His guilty plea in St. Clair County happened in connection with the May 9, 2009 auto accident on the MLK Bridge. According to the Belleville News Democrat, the intoxicated driver lost control of his westbound pickup truck, crossed the four-lane bridge’s centerline and smashed head-on into the eastbound car of a Belleville man. Concrete barriers have since been installed on the MLK Bridge to decrease the number of head-on crashes. These barriers were discussed earlier in this paxil 10 attorney’s blog.
The Belleville man spent a month in a coma and continues to undergo rehabilitation for leg and brain injuries and is still too injured to work.
Driving under the influence of alcohol has been a topic of discussion in many of this attorney’s previous blogs and continues to a source of tragedy. Auto accidents and truck accidents occur all too frequently due to weather, visibility and just human error. Negligence on the highways due to consuming alcohol cost many lives and disables many healthy people every year.
If you are going to drink, it is important to plan ahead so that you will not be driving. The consequences for the drunk driver are usually overlooked as the tragedy for the innocent incenses many. However, living with the grief and guilt if you have caused someone else pain or injury is demoralizing as well as the enormous risk of losing your financial security or even your freedom should you injure someone. No party is worth the consequence of driving while intoxicated.
