Six-Vehicle Crash at Interstate 70 and Interstate 270 Interchange|St. Louis, MO
Six cars were involved in an accident in north St. Louis County early Wednesday morning. Authorities indicated that a pickup truck hit a cement wall and several cars spun out in the opposite direction they were traveling. At this point it is undetermined how many people were injured, but an ambulance transferred some victims to area hospitals. Wednesday morning was a horrific morning for highway travel and many accidents occurred from St. Charles County to Metro East. The 31-car pileup on Highway 40/Interstate 60 was another example of the tremendous damage black ice can cause. The six-vehicle accident occurred at the Interstate 70, Interstate 270 interchange, another location that lends itself to black ice due to the fact that the interchange has air blowing under it and it has an incline.
Numerous injuries occurred Wednesday morning between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. when St. Louis was surprised by freezing rain that had been predicted as a mere “chance”. According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Missouri Department of Transportation was caught off guard by the weather and by the time they had salt trucks dispersed, most of the damage and wrecks had already occurred. The freezing rain made the Wednesday morning drive a nightmare for many drivers.
