Wrong Way Driver Killed in Fenton, Missouri Auto Accident

Posted on December 16th, 2013 by Zane Cagle

head-on-collision-300x2251A 79 year-old woman was killed in wrong-way crash on I-44 Friday night.  Police indicated that the St. Louis woman was driving east in the westbound lanes of I-44 near Bowles Avenue when she hit a car driven by 28 year-old man. Police said the woman’s car then slammed into the highway’s sidewall.

As well, a car driven by 46 year-old man that was behind the 28 year-old man then swerved and hit a vehicle driven by 65 year-old woman.

The 79 year old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the drivers of the other two cars sustained serious injuries and minor injuries.  There were four victims total and they all were wearing seatbelts.

Head-on collisions generally are considered to be the most serious of all types of auto accidents. They happened when two vehicles strike each other from the front and they are very likely to cause serious injuries or even death. Usually head-on collisions occur at greater strike force than when cars strike at any other angle because the force of both vehicles is combined.  Another reason the head-on crash is so dangerous is because the force is concentrated close to the driver and the front-seat passengers. In a head-on crash, the victims often absorb the bulk of the force of the direct hit.

Head-on collisions happen for a variety of reason. According to the article above, it appears one driver was going the wrong way on Interstate 44.  The article did not discuss why the driver was going the wrong way as it can happen for many reasons. Unfortunately, serious injuries and a death were the result. Some of the many reasons for head-on collisions are the same reasons for all auto accidents and include drunk driving, drowsy driving, distracted driving, unsafe passing on two-lane roads and speeding. The article involving the I-44 crash does not speculate on the reason for the head-on collision or why one driver was driving the wrong way. Certainly, authorities have to investigate the crash and interview victims/witnesses to the crash.
