Drunk Driving Accidents and DUI Victims in St. Louis, Missouri

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, 205 people were killed, 2,424 were seriously injured in alcohol-related crashes and 3,480 people sustained minor injuries in traffic accidents involving a drunk driver in 2014. In Illinois during 2013 (most recent data), 991 people in crashes and about 39% (roughly 386) were alcohol-related crashes and more than 38,822 drivers were arrested for DUI in 2013, according to the Illinois Secretary of State. Nationwide, a third of all traffic fatalities in 2009 involved an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The DUI victims often are innocent people who had the misfortune of being hit by an impaired driver.

The risk of being hit by a drunk driver and becoming a DUI victim is much higher at certain times of the day. According to federal data, nearly half of the fatal traffic accidents occurring from 9 p.m. until midnight involve an alcohol-impaired driver. The percentage of traffic fatalities involving alcohol peaks at more than 60 percent between midnight at 3 a.m. when bars close and a higher percentage of drivers on the road are drunk drivers. Nationally, in 2014, there was an average of 1 alcohol-related fatality every 53 minutes.

A driver whose blood alcohol concentration is above the legal limit of .08 percent will be criminally prosecuted for driving while impaired in Missouri and Illinois. But DUI victims who are injured by an alcohol-impaired driver also can file a separate civil lawsuit to recover monetary compensation for injuries and damages in the accident from the drunk driver and their insurance company.
