Two Fatalities in Two Crashes in North Kansas City, Missouri

Two men in their 20’s are dead following two separate crashes early Thursday morning.

Interstate 29 and 64th Street

Around 3:20 a.m., a Nissan Altima was reported heading southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 29. Minutes later, the wrong-way driver hit a Toyota Camry before crashing head-on into a Nissan Sentra near I-29 and 64th.

The driver of the Sentra was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The wrong-way driver, identified as a 21 year-old Kansas City man was pronounced dead at the scene.  The interstate was closed for three hours.

A total of five vehicles were involved in this fatal wrong-way incident. Three cars were involved in the fatal crash, then another driver slowing down to look at the crash was rear-ended. No additional  injuries were reported. Authorities are trying to determine if the wrong-way driver was impaired.

Highway 169 and Briarcliff Exit

The second fatal crash occurred around 5:15 a.m. Investigators said that man was driving southbound along 169 Highway when he struck and killed a 24 year-old northeast Kansas City man who was walking in the middle of the highway wearing dark clothes.  The driver said he did not see the pedestrian and the pedestrian was launched into the median.

It is unclear why the pedestrian was walking down the middle of the highway especially in an areas so far removed from his registered address.  Investigators will continue to look for answers involving this fatal accident.
