Two Pedestrians Killed in St. Louis, Missouri
Posted on January 31st, 2011 by Zane Cagle
A 52-year old man and a 27-year old woman were struck by a southbound SUV on North Grand Boulevard in St. Louis, Missouri. The two pedestrians were in the center of Grand near Montgomery Street and had taken a step back to avoid a northbound van when the southbound vehicle hit them. A witness claimed that she ran into the street to stop the SUV from dragging one of the victims down the street. The driver remained on the scene and neither she nor her passenger was injured. Another witness said, “It sounded like a car ramming into a building”.
Pedestrian accidents are always tragic and horrifying for all of those involved. According to police and The St. Louis Post Dispatch, the investigation may take three to four months to complete. According to Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian accidents nationally are higher, yet during the first six months of 2010, Missouri reported a slight decrease in pedestrian fatalities compared to the same time frame in 2009. In the accident above, the intersection did not have a marked crosswalk or stop sign. While this investigation continues, pedestrians and drivers alike must be ever conscious of safety by increasing their awareness at intersections. Pedestrians should always cross at an intersection to maximize safety.
Serious injuries such as traumatic brain injury, multiple bone fractures and internal injuries can result from a pedestrian being struck by a moving vehicle. Fatalities are very common and can occur easily when vehicles are traveling at a moderately slow rate of speed. Safety efforts including increased education, improved crosswalks, and increased awareness by drivers and pedestrians can reduce the number of pedestrian accidents.
